Comment on Small Business Vital to Economy, says Kellman by Earlyn

Minister of Industry Denis Kellman is perfectly correct when he said: “In order for us to create work in Barbados, we have to learn to support the businesses so they can keep people employed. This economy will not improve until we expand the amount of work and increase business activities in this country. We cannot expand the economy by cutting back,” he pointed out.

Thwe question is: How do you grow and create work and jobs?

The way to create work/jobs is to be innovative in providing solutions to people's problems. The best way to be innovative today in to use available technology or to develop new technology to create businesses and grow them faster than ever before.

The focus of business owners this year must be on the application of Internet technology, which will allow them to reach new markets. Mobile technology has created a new wave of applications for Internet Marketing and will be the area of opportunity this year.

As a business owner, don't be left behind. If you want to learn more about how to apply these new technologies to grow your business, visit our WSI website or call Earlyn at: 418-9869

I will to start a new project here in Barbados. I will like to bring something new and exciting to the Barbados nightclub life and also promote all forms of entertainment here. I have recently returned to Barbados after living in the US for over 14years. I will like to bring entertainment to the people of Barbados like I have in the US.

I applaud the efforts of the BSBA. I think that small contractors need to be diligent in pulling their weight to make it all work and to support their efforts.

The Governing Party in its manifesto promised that 40 percent of government contracts will be awarded to "small business". Much more lobbying ought to be done in order to force the Government to fulfil even one-half of this election commitment.

We have roughly $ 500,000 to spend over the next 20 months, ostensibly to procure jobs in the Tourism sector - good. It will be interesting to see what proportion of that goes to "Training", - since the BSBA has some Training heavyweights - and what proportion really gets to the level of the MSMEs getting help with their material, marketing, production and funding.

Any feedback will be welcomed.

Whereas the Government wastes, according to Farley, $ 300 - 500 million on approximately 25,000 children annually, what do you think is the collective waste on BSBA over the years - an institution charged with creating sustainable jobs ? How well has it discharged its mandate in a way that it can point to a successful venture undertaken ?

Pete.

It is good to know that government is looking out for small and medium buisness because these are the driving force behind the economy. They need growth in these sectors so they must set the tone for growth, we need this get on with it Mr Minister.

Can the SBA give an estimate of the number of EXISTING businesses that they would have helped develop from an idea (of an entrepreneur), in the past 5 years ?
